Porsche has partnered with Frauscher to showcase their upcoming Macan EVs capabilities by retrofitting its electric powertrain into a luxurious sports boat called the 850 Fantom Air. The boat features a powerful electric motor with 536 horsepower and a 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery that can be charged to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. With its impressive performance and environmentally friendly nature, the eFantom is set to have its world premiere in January 2024.
German sports car manufacturer Porsche has joined forces with Austrian luxury shipyard Frauscher in a unique collaboration. Their aim was to showcase the capabilities of the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture by transplanting the electric powertrain from the upcoming Macan EV crossover into a sports boat named the 850 Fantom Air.
The first production boat, which was revealed in June, recently embarked on its maiden voyage on the picturesque Italian Lake Garda. It is equipped with a powerful permanently excited synchronous electric motor, boasting a peak power output of 536 horsepower (400 kilowatts).
Interestingly, this motor is the same one that will be used in the highly-anticipated next-generation Macan EV. However, it is worth noting that the power figure for the Macan EV has yet to be officially confirmed and may potentially exceed the current output of the boat’s motor.
The eFantom sports boat, like its upcoming electric crossover counterpart, is powered by a 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. This battery provides energy to the boat’s single motor, which is connected to the marine Z-drive through a shaft.
To charge the battery, a DC source can be used at a rate of up to 250 kW. Porsche claims that this charging method can top up the battery’s state of charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. In addition to the DC charging option, there is also an 11-kW charger on board as standard. Similar to other Porsche cars, the eFantom offers pre-programmed driving modes, including Docking, Range, Sport, and Sport Plus settings.
The eFantom, a boat designed by Porsche, features a steering wheel covered in marine-grade materials to withstand harsh sea conditions. The Porsche-designed seats have embroidered logos on the integrated headrests.
When in Docking mode, which is for harbor driving, the boat’s speed is limited to eight knots, equivalent to nine miles per hour. However, in Sport Plus mode, the boat can reach a top speed of 46 knots, which is about 43 mph.
The driving range of the eFantom depends on the traveling speed. At a cruising speed of 22 knots, which is approximately 23 mph, the boat can travel for about one hour or cover a distance of 28 miles. If the trip involves both slow and high-speed travel, the journey time can extend to two to three hours.
Stefan Frauscher, Managing Director of Frauscher Shipyard, described the boat as a significant accomplishment in the industry. The electric version of the Fantom Air outperforms the internal combustion engine version in all driving aspects, including top speed, acceleration, and handling. Additionally, it is environmentally friendly as it produces zero emissions.
Measuring at 341.3 inches (8.67 meters) in length and 98 inches (2.49 meters) in width, the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air is spacious enough to accommodate up to nine passengers. It boasts a swimming platform at the rear, a premium audio system with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, LED ambient lighting, LED underwater lighting, a cooling compartment, and a 12-inch multi-information display for the driver.
The eFantom, a new boat model by Frauscher, is set to have its official world premiere in January 2024 in Dusseldorf. It will be released in a limited first edition, consisting of 25 units, which can be ordered from Frauscher directly. The price for this special edition starts at €561,700. Construction of the boat will take place in the Frauscher Shipyard located in Ohlsdorf, Austria. Additionally, Frauscher will handle all aspects of the sales logistics and after-sales management for the eFantom.
