Geelys Zeekr introduces a new LFP battery that can add 310 miles of range in just 15 minutes, outperforming many competitors, especially in low temperatures during winter. The Zeekr 007 sedan with a 75.6-kilowatt-hour LFP battery pack will be launched in China on December 27, offering faster charging times and better range than regular LFP packs. Zeekrs new battery technology, produced in-house, aims to reduce reliance on external suppliers and ensure safety without compromising energy density.
China’s largest privately owned automaker Geely Holding Group recently introduced a new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cell and pack for its premium electric car brand Zeekr. The in-house developed LFP battery can add 310 miles of range in just 15 minutes, thanks to the 800V electrical system. Zeekr boasts that its new battery outperforms many competitors, especially in low temperatures during winter. Following in the footsteps of CATL, another Chinese company, Zeekr has joined the fast-charging LFP battery market with its ultra-fast charging lithium iron phosphate battery pack.
The Zeekr 007 sedan, featuring a 75.6-kilowatt-hour LFP battery pack, will be launching in China on December 27. The new battery technology, which allows for faster charging times and better range than regular LFP packs, will be produced at a Geely-owned battery plant in the province of Zhejiang. Deliveries of the Zeekr 007 sedan are expected to begin in January 2024. This new EV is equipped with a LFP battery pack that enables a range of 427 miles on China’s CLTC cycle. The pack is developed in-house by Quzhou Jidian EV Tech, a subsidiary of Geely Holding Group. It is worth noting that LFP batteries typically have lower energy density than nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries at the cell level.
Zeekr engineers designed the battery pack for the new LFP battery in order to achieve high energy density at the pack level. The automaker claims that this achievement has surpassed many global competitors using LFP batteries. Thanks to the use of newly developed materials and a simplified structural design, the volume utilization of the new battery pack reaches 83.7 percent according to Zeekr. Zeekr also claims that despite the increased energy density, safety has not been compromised. The packs have passed six strict safety tests, including nail penetration, conducted by China’s National Motor Vehicle Quality Inspection and Testing Center. It is worth noting that Zeekr has previously used CATL-supplied nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries on the 001 crossover and 009 minivan.
Geely’s Zeekr premium EV brand has introduced the Shenxing battery in the largest EV market in the world. The goal is to decrease reliance on external battery suppliers. CATL, in August, revealed a fast-charging LFP battery that can increase the range by 248 miles in just 10 minutes. According to the company, the Shenxing battery can provide up to 434 miles of range on China’s CLTC cycle.
